Embracing Your True Self: Navigating Independent School Admissions with Authenticity
As August has rolled in with a thunder (literally and figuratively!) parents are now beginning to think about exploring independent day or boarding schools for their child. The anxiety is perhaps starting to set in as they anticipate a return to their student’s school or the need to look elsewhere or most commonly, the need to “prep” their student for the application process. Our best advice to parents? Hold true to your authenticity, and your child’s too! It's not about hurrying children, making things shine artificially, or attempting to be anyone other than who they truly are. In the realm of admissions, showing up as your complete, authentic self is a cherished attribute that schools greatly value!
Gone are the days when admissions were all about presenting a polished image, attempting to fit into a predetermined mold. Increasingly, modern independent schools are embracing the beauty of imperfection, the uniqueness of each individual, and the genuine stories that make up their applicants' lives. Admissions teams are not looking for cookie-cutter candidates; they are searching for students who will contribute to the vibrant tapestry of their academic community. And yes, this includes neurodiversity in their student population too!
Parents: remember that it's not about molding your child into an idealized version for the sake of admissions. Rather, it's about letting their true personality shine through. Encourage them to be curious, creative, and confident in expressing who they are. Share their interests, passions, and quirks—these are the qualities that make them extraordinary. Admissions teams are more interested in knowing the student who will walk through their doors on the first day of class, ready to learn, contribute, and engage.
Students: embrace your uniqueness and know that your individuality is your strength. There's no need to rush the process or fret over presenting a façade. Your authentic voice, experiences, and ambitions are what set you apart. Be genuine in your essays, interviews, and interactions. Schools want to see the real you, not a rehearsed script.
So, as you embark on finding an independent school education, remember that authenticity is the cornerstone. It's about finding the school that resonates with your values, interests, and aspirations, and letting your students’ true self shine through. When you and your student show up authentically to visit and learn more about schools, finding a place where they will do their best becomes a little easier.
