F is for Fluffy: Social Media Pressure & the Value of Staying Authentic

In the age of social media, much of what we see online is fluff—images curated for effect, posts crafted for “likes,” and captions that present only the highlights. For parents, especially those navigating the independent school journey, this “fluffy” content fuels an unspoken pressure to keep up with everyone else, showing that their family’s path is just as perfect. But at what cost?

As an educational consultant, I experience similar pressures. Social media feeds from other consultants are filled with photos alongside heads of schools, highlight reels from campus visits, and carefully staged images suggesting exclusive connections. It’s easy to think, “Should I be doing that, too?” But then I remember that “F is for Fluffy”—and that fluff rarely builds anything lasting or real.

The real impact in my work doesn’t come from appearances; it comes from authenticity. It brings to mind a quote from my beloved teacher, Chris Shepard, at Northfield Mount Hermon, who once told me, "You will never influence the world by trying to be like it.” Instead of following a trend, I choose to focus on what truly matters: building meaningful connections, guiding families with integrity, and staying true to my values.

So, while others might pursue “fluffy” social media strategies, I’m content to let my work and values tell my story. Real influence doesn’t need a filter—it needs consistency, commitment, and a focus on substance over show.

If your student’s ready to break the mold and find their authentic path, let’s chat! I’d love to help them discover their true voice!
