Why Admission Directors Can’t Afford to Overlook Ethical Educational Consultants

Admissions directors and enrollment management professionals are critical to the success of an independent school? Why? Well, for one, they hold the keys to shaping diverse, thriving student bodies in private schools. Yet, a critical support group for admissions professionals often flies under their radar—reputable, credentialed and ethical educational consultants. These professionals (often referred to as IEC’s), committed to finding the best fit for each student, are invaluable allies who should not be overlooked. I know this, because I am one of them. .

Unlike agents, ethical educational consultants do not receive compensation or commissions from independent schools. This lack of financial incentive ensures that we work solely on behalf of the family, bringing an objective perspective to the admissions process. For schools, this means that these educational consultants cost nothing and offer immense value by introducing students to schools who are genuinely well-suited for the school’s community and student profile.

I’m going to perhaps sound a bit controversial here though but I’m going to take the risk. I believe there are admissions directors who sometimes mistakenly assume that as educational consultants we will continue to promote their school simply due to its brand name. This assumption is a dangerous one. Ethical educational consultants are deeply invested in finding the best environment for their students, and our enthusiasm for a particular school will fade if we feel undervalued or overlooked. Moreso though, it will fade fast if we feel a school isn’t interested in truly learning about the student’s profile and possible fit with a school. Schools that fail to care about relationships with us and trust our referrals as ethical educational consultants risk missing out on full-pay students and exceptional scholarship candidates, including many first-generation college-bound students. Simply put, it’s short sighted!

Educational consultants bring a wealth of knowledge and a genuine passion for education to the admissions table. By acknowledging and engaging with us as professionals, admissions teams can ensure they are attracting and enrolling the best possible students—strengthening their school’s community and future at no extra cost! Can your school afford to overlook such a valuable resource? What steps will you take to ensure these partnerships flourish and benefit your institution?
