It’s Application Time: Beyond Rankings & Brands

It’s been a busy fall for parents and prospective students visiting campuses. Soon they will be shifting their focus towards deciding which schools to submit applications to. This journey of selecting which independent schools to apply to can often feel intense and overwhelming, as many parents and students feel a pressure to apply to the so-called "top-tier" schools. Pssst…. I’ll let you in on a little secret though! The truth is, the notion of a universally superior private school is a myth, and the brand name alone should not be the deciding factor in this important decision.

While the prestige of a school may catch the eye, the key lies in discovering a place where your student can truly thrive, find success, and feel a sense of belonging. The process of choosing the right independent school should revolve around the individual needs, aspirations, and values of your child (and your family), rather than adhering to external notions of status.

I encourage you to resist the allure of rankings (yes, those sites that “grade” schools) and online reviews that often fail to capture the unique qualities that make each school special. Instead, focus on understanding the school's culture, community, and how well it aligns with your student's personality and goals. Beyond the interactive websites, glossy brochures, and virtual tours, seek out authentic insights from current students, alumni, past parents and faculty to gain a holistic perspective.

Remember, the journey to a successful future doesn't hinge solely on the brand name of the private school on a diploma. Numerous paths lead to colleges and fulfilling careers. What matters most is that your student is seen, heard, and supported for who they are and who they aspire to become!

Encourage your child to envision their growth within the school community, emphasizing the importance of personal development, confidence, and a genuine sense of fulfillment. A school's true value lies not in its brand but in its ability to nurture the potential and happiness within each student.

I recently saw a poster with a quote from John Lennon and I can’t help but share it here: “When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy.’ They told me I didn’t understand the assignment and I told them they didn’t understand life.”

As you work towards narrowing your list of schools, stay balanced and move ahead with independent schools that embrace the unique qualities of your child, resisting societal expectations or rankings. By prioritizing a school that aligns with your student's individuality, you lay the foundation for a fulfilling, successful and happy life for your most cherished gift.
