Preparing for the Future: Why a High School Resume Matters!

As your student gets older, having an up-to-date resume that best reflects their achievements and accomplishments is important. Here are some tips your older student can use to get started creating a resume that best represents their accomplishments. .

Start the Process Now

Whether your student has just deposited for private school or they are just beginning to think about school possibilities, the earlier they begin, the better. Starting early allows a student to more easily keep track of everything they have been involved in. From their awards to the after-school activities to athletics they participate in—it all matters!

Developing a resume while still in high school may not seem like a priority, but it can actually be a valuable tool for students in preparing for internships, college, and job exploration opportunities. By starting early, students can build a comprehensive and impressive resume that showcases their accomplishments, skills, and experiences.

One of the main benefits of creating a high school resume is that it helps students stay organized and focused on their goals. By listing out their achievements, extracurricular activities, and work experience, students can identify their strengths and weaknesses, and set goals for themselves to improve in areas where they may be lacking. This can help them prepare for college applications down the road, where they will need to highlight their achievements and experiences to stand out from other applicants.

Another benefit of a high school resume is that it can be used when applying for part-time jobs or internships. Many employers and internship providers ask for resumes as part of their application process, and having a well-crafted resume can make a student more attractive to potential employers. By including details about their skills, work experience, and extracurricular activities, students can show that they are responsible, hard-working, and capable of handling multiple tasks. No need to be humble here!

Know What to Include

Here are some items to highlight in your student’s resume that will help them stand out from the rest.

  • GPA

  • Honors or awards they have received

  • Special courses they have taken

  • Any sports, clubs, volunteer work, hobbies, or interests.

  • Leadership positions in any clubs, spots, or groups

  • Any community involvement activities

  • Relevant skills they have developed (e.g. coding, public speaking, etc.)

Don’t Forget to Edit

Don’t sweat it if your student’s resume isn’t extensive! Taking the time to fill out their resume can give you an idea of groups and activities they are really passionate about, and groups they might want to get involved in.

The end of every school year is a great time for your student to refresh their resume to make sure it accurately describes their experience. Overall, developing a high school resume can be a valuable investment in a student's future. By starting early and taking the time to craft a well-written and organized resume, students can set themselves up for success now and beyond!
