You’re almost there! Finishing up private school applications can be both exciting and nerve-wracking for both parents and students, but you’ve got this! As families approach their application deadlines, I have one important piece of advice to offer…. it's imperative to navigate the final steps with intentionality and authenticity. Here are some practical tips to guide you through this pivotal stage:
Empower Your Student's Voice
Encourage your child to take the lead in crafting their personal essays and responses to application questions. While it's tempting to offer extensive editing and suggestions, DON’T! Allowing them space to express their thoughts authentically is vital. Admissions officers are keen to understand an applicant's unique perspective and voice. And truth talk here…they read LOTS of applications…and they know when a student’s essay prompts are written by parents. So, let your student amplify their voice all on their own!
Provide Guidance, Not Answers
Be a supportive guide rather than a director. Offer insights on structuring essays, generating ideas, and showcasing strengths, but refrain from taking over. This not only builds your child's confidence but also ensures that the application truly reflects their individuality.
Encourage Reflection
Urge your student to reflect on their academic journey, extracurricular experiences, and personal growth. Encourage them to share anecdotes that highlight their character and values. Authenticity shines through when applicants can genuinely connect their experiences to their aspirations.
