Private Schools: How to Narrow your List (thoughtfully!)

You may be tempted to apply to every school that looks even a little bit promising for your student. But we can attest that this is the quickest way to become overwhelmed, confused, and stressed about your options.

Instead, use this guide to help you narrow down schools so you can find your student’s best fit.

Understand What Your Student Needs

It’s easy to rattle off a few things you require from every school: strong academics, a welcoming community, a focus on diversity. Although these elements are incredibly important, they should be criteria every school meets.

When you’re considering what you really want out of a school, think about what your student needs academically and socially and what they could most benefit from.

Take the time to think through what your student has done well with and needs an extra hand at when it comes to school. Add those items to a check-list that every school must meet so you can gloss through them when visiting campus, attending a school event, or doing your own research.

We recommend keeping a list of wants and must-haves. It helps to have an idea of the items that are absolute requirements and a list of items that aren’t exactly necessary but would elevate your student’s experience.

Do Your Research

At this point in the application season, you’re probably a pro at researching schools by now. If you think you’re close to making a decision about where your student should apply, but need just a bit more information, review the school’s website, social media, and carefully read through alumni testimonials. And it’s okay to ask for another visit or a follow-up conversation with someone at the school to help answer any questions you have to learn more!

Even if you’ve previously reviewed these items, it can be helpful to go over them again. You might be surprised at what you find the second or even third time through!

Get a Feel for The Campus

If you haven’t had the chance to visit the schools on your top list yet, it’s time! Although virtual events are a great way to get to know more about a school, nothing compares to being there in person.

Having your student on campus will help them get their burning questions answered and allow them to get a feel for what it’s like to be a student there.

Don’t forget to take advantage of these opportunities! It’s during in-person visits that you get the best glimpse of a school’s personality.

Dig Deep & Double Check!

Now that you’ve attended a school that’s appealing, whether virtually or in-person, it’s time to look through the nitty gritty. Check out the course catalogs or courses of study, affinity groups, student clubs, musical groups and more! How does this match with what your student wants and needs?

At this point you’ve gathered enough information about the school’s you’re most excited about. Make time to look through your must-have list to see which schools most closely align.

Now consider your experience on campus or through a virtual event. Which school did you feel most comfortable and confident about?

Don’t rush this process! We can ensure that no parent has ever regretted carefullying reviewing all the necessary materials before their student submits an application
