Rest After Private School Applications: A Gift for Your Entire Family!
Let’s name it! Exhausting! Yes, the whirlwind of submitting private school applications leaves families feeling drained. After the campus visits, interviews, and countless essays, it’s now time to pause and recharge—AND not feel guilty about it! Embracing self-care is not selfish; it’s essential for both parents and students. By modeling restorative behavior, we’re teaching our kids to prioritize their well-being too.
Although the new year has just begun, there’s still so much of the school year ahead. This is the perfect moment to pause, reflect on the journey so far—both in school and through the admissions process—and give yourselves a chance to reset. Take time to celebrate all the hard work you and your kids have put in, from the big milestones to the tiniest wins. You’ve earned a well-deserved breather!
With admissions decisions not arriving until March (or earlier), you’ve got a window of time to savor. Use it to recharge, enjoy meaningful moments together as a family, and even carve out some quiet time for yourself. These little pauses aren’t just about rest—they’re about connection and gratitude for how far you’ve come!
Try my three tips for meaningful rest and reset:
Schedule Family Downtime: Set aside a weekend or evening just for relaxation and connection. Whether it’s watching a favorite movie, playing board games, or heading outdoors, the focus is on shared, unstructured time together. Trust me, it’s worth it! Last Friday, I planned a family Mah Jong night, complete with some decadent cupcakes, and it was an absolute blast! As we muddled through learning the game, we shared so many laughs and had the best conversations. It’s these moments of togetherness that become the memories we’ll cherish forever.
Practice Gratitude Together: Set aside time to reflect on accomplishments—big or small—and encourage your child to share what they’re proud of. Take the opportunity to share your pride in their efforts too. My sister-in-law has mastered this! At every family dinner, she has us go around the table to share our “high and low” of the day. Sure, my kids roll their eyes at first, but in the moment, something magical happens—everyone listens, shares, and supports one another. This simple tradition has turned into a beautiful way for our larger family to connect and celebrate together
Incorporate Quiet Time: Build in moments for individual self-care. Encourage watching a movie, reading for fun, going for a walk or simply resting on the couch. Model this by taking a few minutes to reflect and recharge yourself.
The gift of self-care goes beyond just taking a break—it’s about building resilience and showing kids that balance is key to thriving. By embracing these moments now, you’re helping them create habits that will serve them well for years to come. So, what’s one small thing you can do this week to hit pause and enjoy some quality time with your family?
